Embracing New Horizons: My Story of Relocation and Ambition
TLDR: I recently relocated from India to the United Kingdom with the goal of becoming a successful data scientist.
Introduction
When I first contemplated creating my personal website using the remarkable Quarto publishing system, I envisioned a platform solely dedicated to sharing my expertise, devoid of personal narratives. However, life has a way of surprising us.
An Unexpected Twist of Fate
In April of this year, during a visit to my hometown, an extraordinary abundance of free time presented itself—a rare luxury that had eluded me for over a decade. It was an opportune moment to craft a meticulously researched and thought-provoking blog post. Little did I know that my inaugural entry on this website would take the form of an intimate and hastily penned piece, prompted by my recent relocation thousands of kilometers away from my homeland to the United Kingdom.
Relocating to the United Kingdom: A Journey of Love and New Beginnings
Leaving India was not an easy decision, especially with aging parents and a younger brother still in college. For the past ten years, I’ve been away from home, studying in Hyderabad and Mumbai. After completing my studies, I had the opportunity to work in Mumbai and Raigad, Maharashtra. Despite the sacrifices, I always knew I could quickly return home within a few hours, without worrying about logistics. Moreover, I had to leave behind a great job in Mumbai, where I had worked my way up to become the youngest Manager in the Monitoring & Evaluation department at the renowned Swades Foundation. But it was a necessary step, and when my then-girlfriend (now wife) moved to the United Kingdom in 2021 as a post-graduate researcher in Social Work, it became clear that the time for me to join her was drawing near. I gladly embarked on this journey, filled with anticipation and excitement, and arrived in the United Kingdom in May 2023 to embrace new beginnings and create a life together.
Immediate Priorities in the United Kingdom
Now that I have arrived in the United Kingdom, several immediate priorities demand my attention. Acquiring a suitable abode assumes paramount importance, as does procuring gainful employment that aligns with my skills and aspirations. Alas, my wife and I have encountered formidable challenges posed by the rental market in the UK, leading us to hop from one Airbnb accommodation to another, sometimes bereft of the convenience of a fully equipped kitchen. Regrettably, my culinary prowess, which I had begun nurturing after our matrimonial union in December of last year, has not had the opportunity to flourish further. On a more positive note, I find myself readily adapting to the local culinary landscape, much to the delight of my wife.
Embracing the Unexpected Path
Life often steers us toward unforeseen destinations—I once envisioned a mathematical career, yet fate seems to be nudging me toward the realm of data science, inching me closer to the discovery of my ikigai.
A Passion for Data Science
Given my background in the development sector, particularly in Monitoring & Evaluation, I have always been drawn to quantitative research, statistics, and programming. Grounded in the social sciences and Development Studies, I feel an unwavering urge to effect positive change in people’s lives.

As I embark on this new chapter in the United Kingdom, I have outlined several strategic steps that will pave the way for me to achieve my goal of becoming a triumphant data scientist:
Continuing Education
I am wholeheartedly committed to augmenting my existing knowledge and skills in data analysis, statistics, and programming. This entails enrolling in cutting-edge online courses, attending progressive workshops, and actively participating in enlightening webinars to remain at the forefront of the field.
Networking
I will diligently seek out opportunities to forge connections with accomplished professionals and esteemed researchers within the data science community. Attending conferences, affiliating with pertinent professional organizations, and engaging in meaningful online forums will empower me to cultivate a robust network and glean invaluable insights from seasoned practitioners.
Practical Experience
I will fervently pursue employment prospects that afford me the opportunity to apply my skills and acquire hands-on experience in the domain of data analysis. Such immersive exposure will not only fortify my expertise but also furnish profound insights into real-world challenges and their corresponding solutions.
Publication and Presentation
I aspire to contribute to the field by disseminating research papers, articles, and blog posts that underscore the potential of data analysis in addressing pressing societal issues. Furthermore, I aim to deliver compelling presentations at conferences and workshops, fostering the sharing of knowledge and nurturing collaborative relationships with fellow researchers.
By ardently adhering to these strategic steps, I am firmly convinced that I can make substantial strides toward realizing my objective of becoming a highly accomplished and respected data scientist. While the path ahead may be fraught with challenges, my unyielding determination to effect positive change and meaningfully contribute to the field remains resolute.
